Plastic equipment such as furniture and toys are not currently included under producer responsibility and national recycling program in Finland. Still, several national strategies highlight the importance of recycling of rigid plastics.

TREASoURcE project carries out a campaign that aims to pilot and study rigid plastic collection and recycling in Tampere region in Finland. During the pilot, citizens can bring rigid plastics to Pirkanmaa Waste Management Company’s waste stations Tarastenjärvi and Koukkujärvi. The campaign period will last for two months, from 18 September until 18 November 2023.

The first step is to make composition study for the plastics to identify which kinds of plastics are collected. To increase engagement of local community and social sustainability, the study will be realised in co-operation with Tampere University of Applied Science student group.

After collection, VTT will study the possibilities for mechanical and chemical recycling. Plastics that are not used for research will be processed by private business. Goal is to get as much of the plastic as possible back to circulating.

Campaign is coordinated by project partner EcoFellows in close co-operation with Pirkanmaa Waste Management Company.
