Children’s play inspires a circular mindset – 25.11.2025

Imagine if everything you needed, from food and clothes to gadgets, grew on a magical tree in your living room. That’s the intriguing premise of “Garbagiamysteriet,” a family-friendly play performed in Fredrikstad, Norway.

The story explores sustainability and our shared responsibility for the environment, following three children raised in a throwaway society who suddenly face the reality behind everything they consume. Their journey toward circularity reflects the shift our society must make from a linear “take-make-dispose” model to a circular economy, where resources are valued, reused, and kept in play for as long as possible.

By weaving environmental themes into an entertaining narrative, the play sparks curiosity and conversation about our shared responsibility. It reminds us that every action matters, whether on stage or in our daily routines. As the children in the play discover, the real magic happens when we choose to reuse, recycle, and rethink how we value the world’s resources.

Fredrikstad municipality hosts multiple circular economy events every year. Community initiatives, such as repair workshops, swap days, and school programs, are making reuse and recycling a natural part of everyday life.

The play was performed in November 2025 by the youth organization Sceneteppe Ung Kultur and a performing arts production company Kulturværste. Previously, it had been staged in schools to promote recycling.
