Fredrikstad municipality in Norway is now testing Swap Box (Bytteboks in Norwegian) as part of the TREASoURcE project. The Swap Box is a smart and easy way to share and exchange items. You can drop off things you no longer use, and if you find something you need, you can take it home for free.

Providing residents with the opportunity to reuse fully functional items helps reduce waste. The municipality is eager to see how the Swap Box will be received by local residents.

Reuse all year, completely free

The Swap Box has been set up at a central location in a parking lot, which has been provided by the municipality. The pilot has been available since mid-August 2025 and will run for six months to test whether the concept works in practice.

The Box only accepts items in good condition and is not intended for waste disposal. Items must be small enough to fit on shelves and light enough to be carried without special equipment, for example, household items such as tools or kitchenware. Clothes and large furniture are excluded.

The container-like space is approximately 2.5 x 2.5 meters on one side and can accommodate a few people at a time inside.

Access to the Swap Box is managed through an app, which allows residents to drop off and pick up items securely.

Small swaps, big impact

The Swap Box allows residents to pass on items they no longer need while picking up things that might be useful to them. It offers a simple way to declutter at home and encourages reuse within the community. By extending the life of everyday objects, people can help cut down on waste and make better use of existing resources, supporting a more circular economy.
